Reexamination of polytropic spheres in Palatini fðRÞ gravity

چکیده
We investigate spherically symmetric, static matter configurations with polytropic equation of state for a class of fðRÞmodels in Palatini formalism and show that the surface singularities recently reported in the literature are not physical in the case of Planck scale modified Lagrangians. In such cases, they are just an artifact of the idealized equation of state used. In fact, we show that for the models fðRÞ 1⁄4 R R, with on the order of the Planck length squared, the presence of a single electron in the Universe would be enough to cure all stellar singularities of this type. From our analysis it also follows that the stellar structure derived from these Lagrangians is virtually undistinguishable from that corresponding to general relativity. For ultraviolet corrected models far from the Planck scale, however, the surface singularities may indeed arise in the region of validity of the polytropic equation of state. This fact can be used to place constraints on the parameters of particular models.

متن کاملA no-go theorem for polytropic spheres in Palatini f(R) gravity
Non-vacuum static spherically-symmetric solutions in Palatini f(R) gravity are examined. It is shown that for generic choices of f(R), there are commonly-used equations of state for which no satisfactory physical solution of the field equations can be found within this framework, apart from in the special case of General Relativity, casting doubt on whether Palatini f(R) gravity can be consider...

متن کاملCluster abundance in fðRÞ gravity models
As one of the most powerful probes of cosmological structure formation, the abundance of massive galaxy clusters is a sensitive probe of modifications to gravity on cosmological scales. In this paper, we present results from N-body simulations of a general class of fðRÞ models, which self-consistently solve the nonlinear field equation for the enhanced forces. Within this class we vary the ampl...
متن کاملDynamical masses in modified gravity
Differences in masses inferred from dynamics, such as velocity dispersions or x rays, and those inferred from lensing are a generic prediction of modified gravity theories. Viable models, however, must include some nonlinear mechanism to restore general relativity (GR) in dense environments, which is necessary to pass Solar System constraints on precisely these deviations. In this paper, we stu...
